How did the Dragon Boat Festival come about?  

端午节是怎么来的呢？ 

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival is often associated with the death of a Chinese poet called Qu Yuan。

端午节的起源常常会跟中国古代诗人屈原的死联系在一起。

Story of Qu Yuan

In Chinese history, Qu Yuan was a poet and a top advisor during the Warring States period for the State of Chu. 

（在中国历史上，屈原是战国时期楚国的一位诗人和政治家）

He was accused of treason and was exiled by the king of Chu.

(他被控告有叛国罪，被楚王流放） After being exiled, Qu Yuan expressed his love and passion for his country by writing many poems. 

（被流放之后，屈原通过些很多诗歌来表达自己对国家的热爱）

On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Qu Yuan drowned himself because he couldn’t bear to see his country  being conquered by the state of Qin. 

（在农历五月的第五天，屈原投河自尽，因为他无法忍受看到自己的国家被秦国征服）

When the local villagers heard this news they were distraught, so they set out in their fishing boats to look for Qu  Yuan’s body, but they couldn't find it.  

（当地的村民听说此事以后非常的悲痛，所以他们坐上渔船去找屈原的尸体，但是没有找到）

So instead, they threw lumps of rice into the river so that the fish or any hungry beasts would eat that rice instead  of eating Qu Yuan’s body. 

（所以他们选择往河里扔一些饭团，这样和鱼和其他一些动物就不会去吃屈原的尸体了） 

And to remember Qu Yuan, people started to race boats and eat rice dumplings on this day. 

（那么为了纪念屈原，人们开始在每年的这也一天赛船和吃粽子）

What do people do during the Dragon Boat Festival?  

人们在端午节的时候做些什么呢？

It is a tradition to eat rice dumplings. 

吃粽子是一个传统／习俗。

It is customary to watch dragon boat racing. 

看赛龙舟是一个习俗。

During the festival, people drink realgar wine and hang mugwort leaves on the door to  repel bad spirits and diseases.  

在节日期间，人们会喝雄黄酒，在门上挂艾草来驱赶不好的东西和疾病。
